My 9-year-old son really enjoys this book!

I recently took the family on a trip up to Shaver Lake. The idea was to not only spend time at the lake, but also visit Yosemite. Unfortunately, the wildfires forced us to change our plans. And while I'm sad that we weren't able to see the wonders within that national park, I'm happy to say we found alternatives. I'm more of an inexperienced hiker, looking to take my kids on mini-adventures. Knowing their limits (as well as my own), I've stuck with easier hikes. And while they've been slightly more challenging than expected, the end result/reward has made it worth it.I really enjoyed reading through this book. When I saw the title, I expected quality. Ranger Rick magazines were something I grew up with and now my kids are enjoying them. So I had to grab a copy to see if this book would be helpful on our trip. First off, it includes a working compass on the cover. I didn't take it out because it would have required cutting open the inside portion of the cover, but that is an option if you purchase this book. What's covered in this book? 1) where to go, 2) when to go, 3) what to wear, 4) what to bring, 5) trail etiquette, 6) staying safe, and 7) making it fun. The first section covering "where to go" should give readers a good idea of what regions are behind the inspiration of this book. The map shows the United States as well as Canada. So for international readers, be aware that while this might be a good general hiking book for your kids, there will be sections that don't necessarily apply due to the region you are in. That said, this is still a really well thought out book and worth it for the hiking prep information alone. I really appreciated that there was a section on "when to go" as I've found (for obvious reasons) that our hikes have been better when done in the early part of the morning compared to midday, as well as the season. Hiking through the California desert in February tends to work better than hiking it in August. And what to wear may seem like a no-brainer, but I've taken relatives on hikes where I've worn pants to protect my legs and they've worn shorts to keep cool. Zipper pants probably would have been the best compromise. What to pack includes the obvious (food and water) as well as first aid kits. There's even a recipe for GORP (aka trail mix). What some might not be familiar with is trail etiquette. Honestly, I wasn't truly aware of this until I'd gone through Cub Scouts with my son. Now I have a chance to teach my kids (and their cousins) the same: what you take in you take out, leave no trace. The section on how to stay safe was reassuring not only for me but also some other relatives that were panicking over the idea of hiking. There are good pictures of poison ivy, poison oak, as well as deer and wood ticks. This isn't such an issue if we are hiking on a well-worn trail away from vegetation; however, I did take the kids out multiple times into uncharted territories in the forest. So it was good to know which plants were safe and which ones were not. Tick checks was an automatic when returning home.So how did we make it fun? Hiking is good exercise but can be a lot of work. Pointing out the view might impress some, but not all. While taking two preteen boys out, I had them stand still for a while and just listen. First the wind, then the birds started and finally we were rewarded with a deer passing us in the distance. Granted, I only saw the fluff on his butt, but the boys saw more. With my kids constantly wanting to stay in a hotel room or cabin with their electronics, I've been more determined than ever to make sure they experience new things. It's a chore to get them ready and out the door, but once we get there, they have fun and when we return, they have a memory that will last them (hopefully) a lifetime. I requested and received a complimentary copy from the publisher, The Quarto Group, in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book will convince even the most reluctant boy or girl that hiking is a really fun experience. Through short snipets of information and advice, the author shares tips about what to dress, how to get ready and how to behave in the middle of the nature. Although for many kids there is no fan if there's no computer game or smart phone involved, hiking is presented in this book as an activity where you don't necessarily follow some nature-lover parent but can be done together with your peers and in a funny way. There are a lot of activities and suggestions about how to spend your time outdoors and how to get involved in common projects and even some creative activities. A good read for the summer holidays!Disclaimer: Book offered by the publisher in exchange for an honest review

#65,115 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was first given a copy of this most magnificent book in December 1972 on a street corner in downtown Miami by a devotee of the Hare Krishna society. He asked me for a donation and I was unable to give him anything at the time. He said he'd give me the book IF I would promise to read it "cover to cover". I promised.I turned the last page and kept my promise by early 1973. I was just 18 at the time and this remarkable book had made an impression. I knew that it was all true. The path of 'Bhakti' or Devotion was a path of renunciation. I said to myself (and to Krishna), I'm not ready to give up the 'world' just yet...come back for me later...and an inner voice said, "OK."32 years went by in a flash...and I had read the Gita at intervals in that time. I got married, had a career, had kids, got divorced, the kids grew up and all left, etc, etc. Basically, I had a life in the material world...although I always concidered myself to be spiritual and was always studying one spiritual path or another. Then in 2005...October 24th to be exact, a hurricane by the name of Wilma blew through Miami and in the ensuing days, while cleaning up my property of broken branches and fallen trees, I would take a break from the yard work by early afternoon (I still live in Miami afterall!). During one of those breaks, I felt ready for something...empty, but in a good and receptive way. I looked around in my somewhat extensive library and the Bhagavad-gita As It IS caught my gaze. I pulled it from the shelf and decided to read it through once again. This time after finishing the 18 chapters and 700 verses, I was captivated! My realization was that obviously, whatever I put my attention on...that's where I will go. Simple enough...and very profound at the same time.I was hungry for more. The book had made a significant impression on my more mature mind this time! I reached for a translation of the Srimad Bhagavatam by the same translator, A. C. Bhaktivedanda Swami Prabhupada and I started reading that. I found I couldn't put it down...and there were constant references back to the Gita...over and over again.A few more months went by and I was still reading the Bhagavatam (it's very long - 18,000 verses and commentary) and I found myself going to the local Hare Krishna Temple in the Coconut Grove area of Miami. Anyway, to make a long story longer :-) I met a Guru at the Temple in the tradition of the translator (ISKCON) and got initiated in November 2008 and received my brahminical initiation in September 2009 as Garga Muni das. So, the short version is simply that this book has changed my life...and all for the better in more ways than I can describe. Read this book! And then read it again with a devotee of Sri Krishna. It will change your life as well.An interesting question that was asked of me when I first started attending the Temple was, "You know that it says in the Bible that it's very important to love God with all your mind, heart and soul. Has anyone ever taught you HOW to do that?" I had to answer that no one had ever taught me how to love God...although I knew it was very important. This book will start to teach you about that very thing...if you will read it with an open mind and an open heart. What I found is priceless. Hare Krishna!

Not only is this perhaps the most profound book I have ever read, it is also by far the most beautifully published book I have ever had. I strongly recommend this to anyone in the process of deciding which version of the Bhagavad-gita to purchase. Before I had this, I had the Eknath Easwaran version, which was perfectly alright, but not on a level with this. While the ideals and suggestions of this text may seem extreme and unnecessary to most people, upon reflection, it is easily recognizable that constantly chasing sense gratification (sex, food, drugs, entertainment, and so on) is ultimately extremely unsatisfying and not the best way to live. The Gita emphasizes that that mode of existence - obsession with sense pleasure - is a tremendous obstacle to spiritual progress. Pursuit of sense pleasure is massively prevalent in Western society, which now encompasses a very significant portion of the globe, and thus, this book is relevant now as much as it ever has been.Read with an open mind, make an effort to see through what cultural biases may clash with this incredible spiritual message, and allow your reading to change you for the better.

Very Iskon-oriented. I don't like his flowery English, but now I understand better why his followers always use that flowery stuff. OK, you can come hit me with your mala bag now, ha ha.

The book is great quality, it has the sanskrit and the written sanskrit along with the translation, but instead of having the sanskrit on the right side of the page and the English on the left, or having the sanskrit on the left pages and having the English translation on the right pages, it has everything mixed together down the middle of the page. So every small verse is separated by several pages. There isn't a sense of continuity between the verses so I can study them myself. It's hard to follow the story because of this. It relies solely on the sermons of the interpreter. So while this would be a good academic or study book, it's not a good introduction to the text for someone who wants to immerse themselves in the lessons and story. But the translation itself is very easy to understand and uses beautiful language, therefore 3 stars instead of 2.

This book changed my life. I'd tried to read other Bhagavad Gita translations, but they had no effect on me, even if I did make it through. This translation, Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS, translated by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami contains the original Sanskrit for each verse, the English translation, and an insightful explanation of many of the verses. This ancient spiritual text explains that we are not these bodies but eternal spirit souls. One can understand the science of the soul. I have read it several times, and get new insight and understanding with each reading. Skip the first chapter if it's too confusing, as it just explains who is present during the conversation between Krishna, and Arjuna. The second chapter is the Contents of the Gita summarized, which prepares the reader for the whole conversation.

The author is the most knowledgeable exponent of the science of Krishna or God at present and on the subject of philosophy and absolute truth this book is a must read and should be in everyone's collection.

Ultimate guide to spiritual enlightenment. It’s a statement by supreme lord him self to liberate impious and materially engulfed individual spirit beings, in his creation. Krsna through discipline of succession is helping all who read, away from the impious effects of his inferior energy, upon his parts and parcels i.e. us. Readers must pay heed and comply through humility and submission to a spiritual master. Spiritual masters can be inquired at all ISKCON centers across the globe. Inter dimensional/ trans multiverse maps to higher planetary systems is also available online or at book shops at ISKCON.
