I really wanted to like this book. The first page we are greeted with the "F" and " S" word. My daughter showed me . I started to read through the book to read it before her. I'm not ok with a 10 year old reading about blow jobs . This book was returned.

This is a quality young adult graphic novel and definitely has merit. I'm saying this as someone who has studied YA literature and has a degree in English literature and is certified to teach secondary English. Perhaps not all, but many of the parents who are complaining about the content may be a bit naive about what it going on in their teenagers' lives. There are several themes in here that may be difficult for tweens to grasp, such as miscarriage and social issues surrounding paternity, but if a parent plays an active role in discussing and reading the literature his or her child is reading, this book presents an opportunity to open up communication about difficult social issues, especially regarding sexuality, between parent and child. If you don't want to "jump into the deep end" with something this explicit just yet, I recommend easing in with a novel such as Hard Love or The First Part Last. An interesting companion novel, to compare themes, would be Crank or Go Ask Alice.

I either wasn't in the mood for a graphic novel or I had too much other stuff to read or work to do, and I just never picked it up.This afternoon, though, I was combing through my bookshelf looking for something quick to read while my daughters watched Beauty and the Beast for the tenth time this week, and I decided that today I was finally going to pick this up.Rose and her parents go to a lake house at Awago Beach every summer. There, Rose gets to spend the summer with her friend, Windy, and the two of them are inseparable for the whole summer. They can watch movies, go swimming, hang out at each other's houses - pretty much everything they want. Plus, Rose and her parents always have fun, too.But this summer, things are already different. Her parents are fighting all the time, and sometimes they even quit talking to each other for long periods of time. Windy is acting a little different, and there is a new guy working at the little store in town, and Rose can't help but think about him a lot. When Rose and Windy witness something with the new guy's girlfriend, they try and put the pieces of this puzzle together to figure out what's going on.At the same time, things are getting even worse between Rose's parents, and Windy doesn't seem to want to do the same things Rose wants to do anymore, making it seem as though they are growing apart.This summer at Awago Beach is unlike any other, and it's the summer that it becomes obvious that Rose is really growing up, whether or not she is ready to.Not only is that a really pretty cover, but the inside illustrations are really well done and add so much personality to this book. I love how they are only done in blue, grey, and purple hues instead of full color - it makes the story a lot deeper and more meaningful, and every page of this book is so beautiful.I've seen some negative reviews for this book about the use of language being a problem for the younger audience, but truthfully, I've heard eight year old kids swear more than what is said in this book, so I can't really agree with that. Sure, there are words like "slut" thrown around here and there, but there isn't anything in this book that I think would be all that harmful - maybe the F-word once? Either way, that isn't something that would bother me, and if this is the kind of book my twelve year old daughter wanted to pick up, I would overlook that, because the book is a really meaningful graphic novel that touches on a lot of important things.One of the important things that This One Summer touches on is the bond of friendship. I loved the friendship that went on between Rose and Windy. They loved each other like sisters, and spent all of their time together. They had meaningful conversations and they talked about real stuff. It's the kind of friendship you can't help but love.Another thing that it touches on is parental issues and how it looks to a child. It might not seem like a big thing, but for those who have experienced it, it might help them to feel not quite as alone when dealing with the problems of their parents. In this book, Rose's parents have issues that they try to work out, but Rose can sense it and it really has an effect on her.The characters, the story, and the illustrations are all beautifully done and incredibly easy to love. I finished this book in the course of a single afternoon and already plan on going back and rereading it very soon!

The artwork in "This One Summer" reaches out and pulls the reader into the story. It is a very sad but well told tale.I have only one caution. The age range is 12-18. The subject matter is such that it may not be appropriate for some 12 year olds:1)references to porn, oral sex, and blow jobs and 2) language.You will have to decide if this is appropriate for your child. My older child can deal with it, but my younger one (still with in suggested age range) wanted nothing to do with it.I was actually surprised at how difficult the story was. There was hope and joy, but so much sadness. The cover artwork is so joyful that I didn't expect it to be quite so heavy. I know it hinted at issues, but I was still not prepared.

I have never heard of this author before and this is NOT some BS review.Being fairly new to the DSLR scene I want to learn as much as I can about my camera (Cannon Rebel T3 1100D). Almost every book I have about digital photography seems to assume that I have a "CLUE" to begin with. I just finished this book and I found it VERY informative, concise and to the point. I didn't feel talked down to or insulted by my limited experience. I found the information simple enough to grasp and leaving out all the technical jargon made a HUGE difference.I will surely recommend this book to anyone who asks what to read to help them improve and understand their camera and abilities. I have ordered ALL of his books and I suspect that each one will offer clear and concise information that I can actually use. If your anything like me perhaps you'll have your camera in your hands while your reading so you can change settings and see the difference by changing just a few parameters as you read this great book. I know my pictures will only improve from reading his EXCELLENT books!Happy Shooting!

After using a Nikon film camera for more years than I care to remember, I entered the world of digital photography when I won a raffle for a sweet little Sony “point and shoot” style of camera. It was a nice little camera, but after having total control of aperture, shutter speed and focus on the old Nikon F2 Photomic, the new “does it all for you” Sony just wasn’t my cup of tea. So, I about 4 years ago I purchased another Nikon; a D7100 this time. Whereas this camera isn’t “professional grade”, it was a lot more sophisticated than the Sony, and did allow for a total manual mode.With that new Nikon, I was able to take some amazing pictures. But as they say “even a blind chicken finds a kernel of corn now and then”, I knew I had a pile of learning to do to be able to take my game to the next level. So, I turned to “book learning” as they say. Among the first books I purchased was Mr. Al Judge’s book, “Mastering Digital Cameras”.The book does contain some good information, and was reasonably inexpensive. Mr. Judge as a nice writing style, coupled with the large print of the book made for easy reading. The book defines many of the terms associate with digital cameras (as well as some the terms associated with cameras in general). It does not cover any of the topics covered to any real detail, so that after reading it, the reader will NOT feel as if they have “Mastered Digital Cameras” by any stretch of the imagination.As a couple of examples, there is only about a page dedicated to White Balance, and only a couple of paragraphs in which Color Space is covered. He then goes on to recommends using a specific color space without giving any reasons why it should be selected. The book is adequate as an introduction, but who can seriously say they have mastered anything after reading a few paragraphs? (I found it ironic the author devoted nearly 2 pages to large format cameras, which to date are not available in digital formats.)From the book it is clear Mr. Judge mainly uses Canon Cameras as some of the information he presents about Nikon cameras is wrong. For example, unlike for Canon cameras (at least according to Mr. Judge), just about any Nikon lens designed for their digital SLR camera, can be used on any of the Nikon DSLR cameras. All of the cropped frame lenses work on the full frame cameras, as well as all of the full frame lenses will work on the Nikon cropped frame cameras. There very well could be other errors as well, not being a master (yet), I can't say.In reality the book is little more than an “Introduction to Digital Cameras”, though it does give plenty of space to advertise Mr. Judge’s other books. The book is little more than an “appetizer” to the full meal of what is need to know to consider being a master of digital cameras.I do not recommend this book.flk k

As a hobby photographer, I have read several books, but never had a descent understanding of ISO, f stops, exposure and ND filters. Feeling overwhelmed, this book, I now have and a descent basic understanding, because he explains it in simple English, and explains how factors interact. I am excited to get out and start shooting. I then moving on other capabilities of the camera. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

I have a BFA in Photography, and have been in a darkroom since I was 8 years old, however, I haven't picked up a camera in many years, and certainly don't claim to be knowledgable on digital photography. I replaced my old manual film Pentax K1000 with a Nikon digital camera and had a very hard time trying to convert my knowledge of film into digital photography. This book was very helpful, very clear and concise. The cut away pictures of the camera are very neat, I don't think I had ever seen those before. This book helped convert my knowledge of film into digital and I feel more comfortable using my digital camera. It gives very clear explanations on metering, focusing, and white balance. I think this book would be great for a beginner or even a person with photography experience but not digital cameras. Great book!

Very useful information for a newbie such as myself. Book was very easy to understand and not overwhelming at all. I wish I would have read this before purchasing my Nixon d3400. I would have either bought a Canon or Nixon 5100 instead, but the bundle I got was too much to pass up (18-55, and 70-300 lenses. ) I'll be reading his book about aperture. Shutter speed, and ISO.

I want to start this review by giving a sincere thank you to the author, Al Judge. As a former photography student who learned almost nothing over a two year period, I can now say that I fully understand the terminology and possess the technical skill to take better photographs and possibly revisit my dream of becoming a sports photographer. Mastering Digital Cameras reads like a textbook only better. It contains all of the information of the best college level textbooks but is actually easy to understand. The only curriculum this book follows is that of a master photographer like Al Judge. And the best part about it is that you don't need to have any previous photography experience to be able to pick up this book and learn how to choose and use a new camera. If you are a seasoned pro, you can still learn a thing or two from this book, but if you are new to photography you will learn more just by reading this book than anyone can ever teach you in a formal class. For someone like me, the abundant illustrations were very helpful. I learn better by doing and aside from having the author right here with me, the book's illustrations are the next best thing. If you are in doubt about this book, just buy it and give it a read. It is well worth the time if you want to build a solid foundation for your photographic skills.

I found this a very entertaining look at Indiana history. I learned so much about pioneer life, and daily activities. I was certainly overjoyed to confirm what I have believed for a long time, and admired about the early educational system. I was surprised that students only went to school in December, January, and February; and on every weekday, even Christmas. What was especially gratifying was learning that my idea of students not going on to a more advanced lesson until they successfully passed the current one they were working on, unlike our modern "factory schools" in which learning is based on a time table, not successful results. We sometimes think that the pioneers weren't all that smart. This book shows that in some ways they were smarter than we are today

My ancestors settled in central Indiana in the early 1800's. Altho I know their names, where they settled, etc, I didn't have any source as to what their everyday lives would have been like. However, this book goes a long way to fill in those gaps, and to answer those questions. One of the things I always wondered was how in the world did they clear the land for farming, given the tools of the day? Now I know. Also, if you are a teacher and/or homeschooler, I would highly recommend this book for any of your students that are the "Gander Mountain" type. I think it would hold the interest of high school aged boys who like to hunt and fish.

Five stars because this is an invaluable source that contrasts with Little House on the Prairie and other American 19th century homesteading quasi-fiction. If you like those books you will recognize a lot here, but also learn a lot of new and different things. It doesn't sugar-coat anything, unlike Laura Ingalls Wilder. Do read it, you won't be sorry.

Being from the great Hoosier state, it was wonderful to imagine back to a time when our capital city was actually still an undisturbed wilderness! This writing made it easy to imagine how my own great grandparents probably lived here. Beautiful story.

Must read. Especially for hoosiers.

This is a great book for learning what the pioneer life was really like. It is not a romanticized version, they are real stories from a real person, of his life as a pioneer boy. They may have had simple things to work with back then, but trying to survive the hardships on a pioneer farmstead was not a simple thing to accomplish. He doesn't make it out to be heroic; it was just his life at the time. I got the book because this pioneer boy was the same exact age as my g.g.grandfather, who also grew up in a pioneer cabin 32 miles northwest of where Oliver Johnson lived in Indianapolis. This has helped me to visualize what it was like for my pioneer ancestors at the very same time and place in history.

This is exactly what I needed to enhance my character in Prairietown at Conner Prairie.

Interesting insight into life in Indiana shortly after Indiana became a state. Nice account of wild life and the ways of living.

When I Wake Up is an instant hit with my 3 year old son! The quality of the book and story is top notch. My son loves the book and gets very interactive when i read the story to him as the story has a variety of elements such as animals, colors, shapes, and fun lessons! The art is elegant and inviting with beautiful water colors. Another great aspect of the book is the construction and page stock quality - my son has a tendency to man-handle books, When I Wake Up uses thick glossy stock I don't have to worry about he book getting damaged. Highly recommend this fun book!

Very cute rhyming book about a little girl who has trouble going to sleep at night until she begins thinking about all the possibilities for fun that await her when she wakes up. She can be creative by drawing and painting, enjoy physical activities like kite flying and bike riding or visit exciting spots like the zoo or playground with family or friends. There is so much to discover. She decides that she can't wait to put out the light and get a good night's sleep to be prepared for the coming day.I read this book on my kindle, but I would highly recommend purchasing the sturdy board book for toddlers and preschoolers. This book is a good choice for a read aloud that can be shared by older and younger siblings. The plot is a good way to entice reluctant sleepers to embrace bedtime. Illustrations are bright and appealing; my only criticism is that the little girl looks older than the little girl she is portraying and sometimes appears a bit mature for the character in some scenes.

This is a great book for a child who doesn't really want to go to bed. It not only gives them a story they can relate to; but it also helps to solve their problem and give them something to think about, which is what they have to look forward to the next day. It is also good for a child that doesn't mind going to bed, again gives them ideas. I don't remember seeing what age group it is for, but my 3-year-old grandson loves it. He tends to judge books right away and makes the decision never to allow me to read that particular book to him again, but this one he asks for over and over again. Then of course he wants to talk about what he will do the next day, which is the whole point. Illustrations are simple and creative and this grandma likes that the print is big enough to read without taking the book out of his view, and it is on a white background..yay!

I thought the author did a grand job of making this story so fun and making no it easier for these youngest ones to want to go to sleep when they might not otherwise. I felt she did a super job in getting her point across to get them to want to accept their bedtimes. Therefore, I want to rate this as a five star book and recommend this for kids especially ages 0-5 or even a bit older who have refused to go to bed and sleep when told to do so.I received this ebook for free and in return, here is my honest review. My Granddaughter really enjoyed this story. It was relatable, she understood the concept, and was attentive as I read to her. This also gives good ideas for children and parents to do activities together or with friends. I also enjoyed reading it, and will definetly read it to her again in the near future, and would recommend it to all parents, friends and teachers.

I returned this book because it was the old version, i.e. black and white and pictures of celebrities from the 90s. At first glance, I knew my niece would not be interested.

Bought it for my teen daughter, she loved it.

This is not a good book for all young African American girls. all of the girls have make up and chemically treated hair. This is not OK if your trying to teach your young princess to be happy with who she is as she is NOW. That is if you don't allow your teenager or preteen to wear makeup, and your don't allow her to chemically treat her hair. I didn't give my child this book, nor will I re-gift it. Hope this helps moms that are raising daughters to appreciate their natural beauty.

I bought this as a gift for one of my daughter's friends a year ago. She still thanks me and tells me how much she's been able to use it and how helpful it's been. She wants me to find something just like it for her birthday this year, too. There simply aren't enough books like this for black preteen and teenage girls. She has made a lot of changes not just in how she takes care of herself, but also in the way she views herself. She's become quite the confident young lady in the past year.

Our adopted daughter is trilled with this book. SInce I am not of African descent, there is much I cannot answer for her. This book takes care of it all!

I ordered this book for my 15 year old for Christmas. Right away she started a skin cleaning program and started drinking more water. I wanted her to know there are resources for African American girls her age. The nice pictures of the celebrities and inserts really caught her attention. Pack with info and easy to read.Thanks

This book perpetrates years of negative media images of African American people and women in general. It contributes to the false notion that a Eurocentric physical appearance is an indicatior of African American beauty. The photograph on the front cover of the book is a fine example of this. All of the young women in the photograph have long straightened/chemically altered hair and their skin complexions range from light to medium brown. None of these young sisters are dark skinned nor do they sport natural and/or short hair styles! In addition this book contributes to the socializing of girls into beingself-consumed with beauty. A young woman's self esteem should be based on her character, her talents and her accomplishments NOT on her appearance. They must know they are special because they are respected and valued. Tips on beauty from the "Hollywood stars" and beauty tips on how to prepare for a "date" are shallow issues that do not build self-esteem, strong principals or values. Lets not insult the intelligence of our teen daughters by believing that their world ONLY consits of beauty and dates. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK! More appropriate books for young African American womens'beauty should be centered around self-love and self-acceptance. Natural beauty books that truly embrace self-love/acceptance and Afrocentricity are "No Lye" by Tulani Kinard and "Lets Talk Hair" by Pamela Ferrell. Start your daughters off with these two books. It is in these kinds of books that the "beauty" issues around self-esteem that plague so many African American women and teens today are discussed. It is also in these books that various photos of African American females of many complexions,and hair textures/lenghts and ages are shown.

A non-black friend asked if this was an appropriate gift for my daughter. She was concerned that there were no photos of girls with natural nappy or kinky hair and styles and while pretty - all of the models were medium to light brown. We have been friends a very long time. teen age girls are so sensitive and impressionable. we have to be aware of the messages we send to them. I am not comfortable with this message for my daughter.there is a very short section on natural hair ' which is difficult to manage'. REALLY?!?!?!
