Let me say: it is not for the faint of heart—but do it anyway. Go in with your eyes open. If you're already a director, dig into Kaiser's books for what you didn't know you needed to know. The Art of the Turnaround is an ideal place to start.Michael Kaiser’s journey from one troubled arts organization to the next is, in a way, always the same. Disaster is in the air when he arrives. Money is in the bank when he leaves, plus thriving art. Some view repetition as boring. Perhaps more boring, once you look at it, is the constant crisis or near-crisis that characterizes many wonderful arts organizations. Maybe we take “starving artist” too much to heart. It can be different.A few years ago I had the opportunity to attend a two-day "Boardmember Development Intensive" seminar at the DeVos Institute in Washington DC. The seminar was led by Mr. Kaiser, who was then the president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He had some high-octane assistants who also presented. A couple hundred attended from all over the U.S. plus some international travelers. The seminar was the "real deal" where people who did the seemingly impossible told you the work was hard, rewarding, and definitely doable, and you could do it, too. I had read Kaiser's books. The seminar was built on the same foundation. The details were the same, even while the in-person presentations added more oomph to the message. If you have the chance to attend, by all means do so. Meantime, read this book and his others.Back at my non-profit's board meetings I was well-prepared to explain clearly why we should or should not take some action. Be prepared for skeptics to quickly reply “Yeah but you’re not Michael Kaiser and this ain’t the Kennedy Center.” Valid points but not on target. As I work on helping to turn around two small performing arts non-profits, I keep referring to this book. It's a great place to start and points one in the right direction. I've passed it around to Board Members and others involved, some have purchased their own copies (my copy is highlighted and heavily sticky noted). Michael Kaiser has turned around some of the great performing arts organizations when they were down on their heals. Artists often don't know anything about operating a business, so they fail. Large or small organization, you will learn something from this book. You will need to supplement with other material, but begin here. Mr Kaiser is a businessman who loves the arts. If that's not who serves on your Board and Management, get rid of them and learn who should be on those Boards and Management. I highly recommend this book for your performing arts organization.

Hearing Michael Kaiser in person is what prompted me to explore this very interesting book. Kaiser has had remarkable success in nurturing several professional arts organizations to good fiscal and organizational success.I was part of a group of several hundred patrons and representatives of the arts to hear Mr. Kaiser interviewed by Maestro Michael Stern of the Kansas City Symphony. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. It quickly became apparent that Kaiser is very smart, has an abundance of common sense accompanied by great instincts, and provides leadership that keeps people focused on the mission. The bulk of the interview was his "off-the-cuff" review of ten principles that have guided him in turning around struggling organizations. Also obvious, was that these ten principles apply not just to the arts but to many organizations, especially NPO's that rely on donors for their existence.Kaiser's principles are profoundly simple, yet powerful if diligently and faithfully applied. Immediately, I ordered copies of his book for key people on a number of NPO boards on which I serve. The principles are found right up front and the rest of the book illustrates them by recounting Kaiser's personal experiences of turnarounds. I highly recommend this book.

After I finished reading it, I knew that Sarah Dessen was about to become one of my favorite authors.I want to believe that this specific story has a special meaning to everyone. For me is about changes. Haven is 15 years teenager who's life is being put upside down and in the moment Summer Lee, her older sister boyfriends, appears in her life and bringing her back to those times, when her parents were together, her sister was happier and she felt part of something. I think that once in our life we have to deal with a situation in our lives like that. I can relate with Haven, after I broke up with my ex-boyfriend I thought I would never be happy and for a long time nothing make sense, I thought that I was always were meant to be broken but in the end I realize that you have to pick up the weeds and keep the flowers and though I was happy at that point of my life that happier and merrier time would come for me.. You see what does Sarah Dessen books does to me? I can even apply it to my personal life.As I always say Dessen has a gift to convey emotions, and create characters that you can relate too, even though this is the shortest book of Sarah, I think is one of the must honest and truthful novel she have even written . I can assure you that at some point you would relate with one character of the book, the plot is simple yes but very well thought and the end is very satisfying because she gives closure to the main character.Hope that this review was helpful, and my apologizes if I made it too personal but yet the book has a special meaning for me.

I have been buying silver dollars, mostly Morgan's, because, like many others, I am fascinated by them, as well as a few Peace dollars for the past few years now. After purchasing and paging through this book, I quickly discovered my Peace silver dollars are not worth more than theirsilver content of .7650 troy ounces multiplied by the current spot price of silver. But a few of the Morgan dollars I own aremore valuable due to their low mintage. It was all in this book. I am far from a professional silver investor but had notrouble understanding the material. The sections on cleaning silver coins and coin grading were informative and the detailsof where the wear marks first appear when these coins have been circulated was interesting and new to me.This is the second book I have purchased from this author and both make for understandable, easy reading. If you are thinkingof investing in Peace or Morgan dollars or already own some, I highly recommend this book.

This book is chock full of soldiers bare-assed or frontally naked. The men in the photos are shown in the shower, at a beach, on their bunks, etc. It is casual nudity of men living and working together. There are several pictures of naked men at play, such as one man sitting on another's shoulders in a lake. These are men, who were comfortable with one another without homophobia coming into play. It was innocent camaraderie without it being sexual. A lot of men would not like the thought of one guy's bare balls resting on his shoulder. These are average guys in the army caught exposing themselves in real-life situations. Not all of the guys are hunks, but they are all beautiful.

Possibly the gold standard in WWII memory book of mixed gay and straight interest, this is one of the most complete collections of "off-duty" photos of soldiers and sailors of many nations in wartime currently available. Aside from the excellent photos themselves, the most notable aspects of the publication is the selection of excerpts from earlier texts from pop tunes ("My Buddy") to pointedly gay texts used for only veiled erotic context if at all ("Coming Out Under Fire") to famous man memoirs (Gore Vidal) to set up and organize the collections of depictions. One of the most extensive of these, an "Introduction" (some introduction! It starts 61 pages into the text!) by one Scotty Bowers, an at one time baby faced 18 year old marine closet case now in his 80's (see his own more salacious post-war gay Hollywood memoir, "Full Service") whose detailed memoir of the context of the photos would raise the book head and shoulders over the competition were it not for his too frequent "me thinks the lady doth protest too much" insistence that there was no homosexual activity or even subtext in his beloved Marine Corps. - an insistence all too often belied by the photos themselves and his own narration. CAN one "even rub another guy's cock" (Bowers' words) with no thought of homosexual overtones? A couple illiterate Amazon commentators have objected to the multi-lingual text of this excellent Taschen release claiming it was frustrating that they could not follow ALL the text. Had they bothered to look a little closer, even without significant linguistic skill, they would have noticed that the multi-lingual texts are merely REPEATING in French and German (for the aid of other nations' readers where Taschen markets) the same texts first given in English. ALL the photo captions (where given) are in English. The list price is on the high side, but thanks to the web, few buyers who care to be as fair to their purses as to their eyes and intellects need actually pay full price. Given the basic publication costs today, the $41 that I paid was entirely reasonable.

This book was very interesting. It was great reading about how the men coped with all the mayhem in their lives. This is a slice of how things were back then. A different perspective on men and war. Times were much simpler back then. People could be people without being labeled. Many lifelong friendships developed among these men who had been thrust together in the mists of war.

There are more than a few homo-erotic depictions in this coffee table collection of WWI "RnR."Sailors lived in close quarters and were essentially immodest. The frontal-nude photos are an amazing collection of "pre-modest" American Men who were proud owners...and it shows!(The circumcision-laden offspring [Baby Boomer Boys] would not have NEARLY as much casual exposure... while exaggerating their modesty.)

Even though the text is multi-lingual the pictures in this beautifully crafted book speak a universal language. The fun,frivolity and companionship of bare Laid buddies captures an intimate spontaneity of men with men in the most dire circumstances. These photographs are beautiful on many levels remember photos my father had from world war two-like these-they spoke of a dimension only the participants could fully understand.

Great photography book! IF you were to judge a book by the cover, this one would be the winner. Beautiful cover, nice pictures, good historical commentary. Just an all around great book. I collect photography books and this is one of my new top favorites. It is also more reasonable in price than many photography books that are not as good. If you are interested in the male form or history, this is the book for you. The pictures give the viewer a peak of men in a natural, uncensored way, during a time of their sexual awakening and innocence without social labels. It is refreshing to see pictures that are not posed, or touched up like most contemporary photography books (especially gay male erotica). This book has value for its historical, as well as photographic images.

Absolutely incredible book. The photos, the text all transport the viewer to a far distant time and give you an entirely new take on what it was like during the quiet times between fighting. The male bonding, the brotherhood of the soldiers, is beautiful depicted in this priceless collection of photos. It is historic, it is artistic, it is sociological, it is simply so many things wrapped up in one beautifully produced book that will occupy a place of honor on my bookshelf.

Wow, so interesting and great that these were published. Show male bonding in a way that does not exist anymore due to homophobia. This is a time when guys could be guys and were not concerned so much about showing affection or looking gay. Its a nice history of WWII that has not been shown before. Quality book and fun really for anyone.

I took this course from Kishor a long time ago, using the first edition. The only problem with the first edition was that the bindings wore out: as a result, I've had several copies (including copies of the Indian student's edition I got while it was out of print in this country.) I did not do particularly well in the class; none the less I use the things I learned from his book literally every working day.I'm about to order a copy of the second edition. Anyone else working with these things should do so also.

This book seems written more for people with experience in Probability and Statistics. The examples in the chapters were not explained very well for a novice. The text itself was helpful. This would be good as a side reference in a class, or it might benefit someone with more experience in the topic.

As someone who gives courses in Probability Theory for engineering and management students for many years, I must admit that this is one of the best textbooks on the subject. The theory is presented clearly with all necessary explanations and details. And the selection of examples and problems is really great!! I do not hestitate to recommend this text to anyone who teaches/studies Probability Theory for the purpose of applications.

Second edition of "Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications" by Kishor S. Trivedi is a highly recommendable book. The concepts provided for probability theory and stochastic processes are excellent for students of communication, networking and computer science. It provides a good understanding of stochastic processes and Markov chains which are very relevant for students and teachers especially working in the speech processing area. I found the book and its contents very relevant and the examples provided could be very well related to networking and computer science, a unique aspect of this book. The students grasped the concepts well and found the problems very challenging and helpful in building up their concepts and knowledge. I had previously taught a number of other books and introduced this book last year at my University, I feel very satisfied and content with the decision of choosing this book for my students. All eleven chapters are equipped with excellent examples, problems and exercises broadening the reader's mind. The first 5 chapters constitute the probability theory while the rest of the chapters emphasize on stochastic processes very relevant to students of advanced networking and speech processing. I have read almost everything this author has written about England during the Middle Ages. This novel did not seem to have been as popular assome of her other books. I bought it because I was running out of her books to read ! What a pleasant surprise- I think it is one of her best !If you are a Philippa Gregory fan or a fan of this genre, don't miss this book !

This is a very engaging novel centering on a Hannah Verde/Green. She is a young (secretly) Jewish girl who has just escaped the Spanish inquisition to England with her father, who is a bookseller. In an unusual twist, her father -- in an attempt to protect her -- has disguised her as a boy. A member of the royal court comes to the humble bookshop one day, and Hannah's father "begs her for a fool" at Court. When the only living son of Henry VIII dies, his daughter, by Katherine of Aragon, Mary, takes the throne, and Hannah is swept into Mary's service. She also comes to know another royal princess, Elizabeth, who is next in line for the throne.While Hannah may be a fictitious character, there is a great deal of history packed into this novel having to do with England's relationship with Spain and France at that time, the plight of Jews all over Europe (including in England), the shifting attitude towards religious freedom in England, and the restrictive nature of a woman's life in the 16th century. And of course, there is a love story intertwined throughout the book. Hannah, who is a gangling adolescent at the beginning blossoms into a beautiful young woman by the end. I don't want to give too much away, since I want you to enjoy the book as much as I did!

Philippa Gregory does a really good job with the nuanced picture of Queen Mary whose life was so uneven and dysfunctional. She also does a very good job describing the fear in the general population during the years of Queen Mary's reign. As described, there were regular, frequent burning of heretics ("heretics" according to Queen Mary and her advisers) and it has been described by historians as a reign of terror. It was especially dangerous for Jews as described by the book's protagonist. So those aspects of the book create an important and realistic backdrop for the book.However, there are two things wrong with the book - first, the "cover" story about the young girl who plays the Queen's fool is fairly unbelievable. Secondly, the book lacks character depth - in a good book you should know how the characters feel because of what they say and do, not because the narrator has to continually tell you. I felt like Hannah was inconsistent. But, I loved her spunk!After reading this book (which we read for our book club) I read a non-fiction history, "The Wives of Henry the Eighth" by Martin Hume. This book provides the background to significantly help understand the deeply unstable environment in which Queen Mary was raised. It vividly evoked the terror and horror of Henry VIII's reign as well as the egocentric, un-motherly behavior of Katherine of Aragon, Queen Mary's mother. If you want to enjoy The Queen's Fool more, first read "The Wives of Henry the Eighth".

I like the whole "Tudor" series for its characterizations and views into what that court and lifestyle was like. However, this one is my favorite. It's a view from someone who must hide in full view; a total alien to the courtly lifestyle who must figure out which alliances to keep, and which secrets, to preserve her life as she becomes increasingly part of this new world. The author makes it clear how difficult it was to be Jewish in Tudor England; even before the focus on doctrine given by the reformation it was a life of defense and hiding. And, the author uses that to show us what the court would be like, and how one would get swept up into it, as a basically normal person trying to get by. I found it very interesting.

What a fascinating story of a young girl émigré escaping the Spanish Inquisition! This poignant portrait of the beloved only child of a Spanish bookseller quickly envelopes the reader into Tudor England and then Gallic France where her father and betrothed escape when England is thrown into turmoil as the Catholic Mary ascends the throne.The hardships she endures, the tough choices she is forced to make and her life as a secret Jew make a delicious read. I love Phillipa Gregory's writing. I got a great deal through one of the many book clubs I subscribe to (BookBub, Sweet Deals, etc.). If you're a passionate reader belonging to a club saves you hundreds of $ if you're okay with e-reading.

So I enjoy the previous work of the author so I expected it to be good, but thought it might be a little stale or textbook, not at all.Read this if you want to improve your presentations. Whether for business, pleasure or whatever this lays out a very nice formula, some good examples and an extremely structured view of how to approach presentations.This doesn't focus on slides and visuals like her previous work (though that was excellent in it's own right). In fact this book can guide you on how to do presentations without slides.Overall it's interesting, engaging, and extremely informative.

Quick and easy to digest read about how to improve presentations. The book provides a good high-level description of some key areas of focus. Nancy Duarte starts with how to understand and appreciate your audience. She follows that up with expanding on how to develop the message and the story behind the presentation. Afterwards, she discusses the medium of the presentation (not everything requires PowerPoint) and then goes further into the actual slides and methods of delivery. Lastly she touches on the impact and follow-through post-presentation. I found the topics useful and very applicable to my work.

This is really the only Duarte you need to buy, if you're looking at her body of work and wondering. No, it doesn't have all the layout stuff that Slideology has, but after reading all her stuff (library and purchased), I feel like this would have been the one to focus on (although it was published AFTER I had read through all her others). I feel it's the most practical, and jettisons some of the fluff you find in her other books. I have highlighted, dog-eared and stickie-taped throughout this whole book.

Nancy Duartes follows up her wonderful presentations books slide:ology and resonate with this HBR handbook in how to make and deliver the presentations. The book follow the full chain from creating your ideas to how to the follow up on the talk. I especially enjoyed the last part, the delivery, which for me was 'most new', since I have read the other books. For the other parts I prefer the two individual books, maybe not least since they are more visually appealing. The HBR format do make this book a little dull compared to the other books. The text is on the other hand, as always, interesting and has a good flow.If you are interested in only one book about presentations, then this is the perfect option (maybe with a reservation for the graphical format). If you are interested in more books, you should complement with Nancy's previous boooks.

Just what I've been looking for! I teach an introductory management course in an MBA program, and this book provides details and discussion about all of the criteria already in use in our grading rubric for Business Presentations. At only $15, I won't hesitate to recommend that all of my students add this little guide to their personal library.
