Review

Advance Praise for Dana Thomas's Gods and KingsJon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Thomas Jefferson and American Lion: “Dana Thomas has written a real-life saga that is as engaging and compelling as a work of great fiction. By taking us inside the fascinating world of fashion, she gives us a startling tale of ambition, creativity, fame, and ultimately tragedy. This is a terrific book.”Michael Gross, author of Model and House of Outrageous Fortune: “Comprehensive, detailed, coldly accurate yet extraordinarily sympathetic, Dana Thomas’s Gods and Kings is a fascinating double biography of two dressmakers of genius. But it's also a riveting, definitive history of the three decades in which fashion devolved from a coddling cottage business to a cutthroat industry quite capable of killing its young. As commerce triumphs over art, you can only cringe, but you also have to admire Thomas's exhaustive account of what fashion folk would no doubt refer to as a moment that will never, and can never, be repeated.”Teri Agins, author of Hijacking the Runway and The End of Fashion: “John Galliano and Alexander McQueen raised the bar creatively and theatrically with their high-impact fashion shows. In Gods and Kings, Paris based fashion writer Dana Thomas digs deep with the zeal of a historian, to chronicle the parallel dramas of the British fashion wunderkinds, whose careers ended tragically, way too soon.”Richard Johnson, columnist, The New York Post"McQueen and Galliano were two peas in a perverse pod who revolutionized fashion. No one but Dana Thomas could have explained with such insight how their fantasies became ours and directed our dreams."

bought first copy as a gift. started reading it, then bought a second copy. if you want to learn more about the two designers, great. if you want to learn more about the innards of the high fashion industry, even better. it isn't all thin models in fashion shows, celebrity filled audiences, trendy parties, and art. "gods and kings" provides a perspective of the raw and sometimes inhumane exploitation of designers in the high fashion industry.

I bought it for a friend who is obsessed with fashion and learning about the designers. He absolutely loved the read.

This book was fascinating to read, and I am not all that interested in couture fashion. The rise of two gay men from humble beginnings to wealth and power was what kept me clicking through the pages. But I now understand a little better why designers show outrageous creations on the runway, how the fashion houses make money, and how much pressure the star designers are under. Note: If you read this on Kindle, be aware that pictures of the designers and their creations are at the end of the file.

Couldn't stop reading. A fascinating and compulsive read offering an intimate look into the lives of two of the most famous men in fashion today. I am not an avid follower of fashion and both men were known to me only in name prior to reading this book. The genius of Dana Thomas is that as a full-on fashion insider, she is able to not only share that world through her words, but to make you truly care for these two men and their tumultuous and ultimately tragic life stories.

If you want to understand the great changes fashion has suffered in the last 30 years and how it is nowadays in some kind of creative turmoil, this book is a wonderful starting point. Learning about the rise of Galliano and McQueen makes you understand so many aspects of fashion before, during and after their most creative periods.

The book is very well written. I worked in fashion in the same period as Galliano and McQueenand met Galliano at the beginning of his career. I remember thinking he would make his mark in fashion. When you go up the ladder be kind to people because when you you go down you might meet them again. He failed to remain humble.McQueen also forgot who helped him to succeed like ; Isabella Blow in her own right was a genius.Alexander McQueen was a true artist and genius.Galliano had other problems then a racism and I am glad the fashion industry has given him a new beginning

The great thing about this book is that is brings back the days when fashion was this inventive and creative - especially the work of Alexander McQueen - and fortunately, the Web has all of his shows, so you can go back and view them again. Unfortunately, the writing is a slog. So many potentially great stories were suggested and then never followed up on. This was written by a journalist with an eye for details, who, what, when and where and she lists them all, but fails to develop anything beyond the surface. Unfortunately, both men come off looking like monsters although the writing makes one more sympathetic toward McQueen. Unless you are a dedicated fan of fashion, this book will bore you.

Very informative.

Review

Winner of the 2006 Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Literature "A palimpsest upon Treasure Island, William Gilkerson's beguiling creation, Pirate's Passage, has everything: irresistible characters, richly textured history, humor, suspense, and adventure. Steeped in wit, philosophy, and mystical ambiguity, it takes a maverick approach to history. A challenging children's novel with a dangerous edge, Pirate's Passage is a work of genius. . . . This novel will be read by readers of all generations."—Canada Council for the Arts Winner of the New York Library Association "Book of the Season" Award Spring 2006 in the Young Adult Book Category "Captivated, my imagination bound hand-and foot, I was shanghaied by Pirate's Passage."—Philip Kopper, The Washington Times "Beautifully paced, well-written, thoughtful, and clever. Gilkerson's familiarity with seamanship (he is the author of ten books on nautical matters) makes it especially enjoyable."—The London Times “Full of intrigue and fascinating history.”—VOYA "A small seaside town . . . a mysterious visitor . . . a voyage of self-discovery. Murphy, Editor, WoodenBoat "This marvelous tale crashed over me like a great wave, submerging me in a gleeful yarn of adventure, intrigue, and memorable characters. Pirate's Passage creates its own kind of ship—and I advise any readers who enjoy a rollicking good story to climb aboard!"—T. A. A book for writers and readers!I think I clicked on this out of boredom a year ago because it was cheap or free. I really hope Gilkerson is making a good living off his books, because I'm only a quarter way through this, but I can tell he deserves it. A reader likes to read a book where the author doesn't keep jabbing his talent in the reader's face every sentence. A reader signs on for a story and wants the writer to get out of the way.A writer likes to read a book the same way, but enjoys it when the author shows off a bit of flair without being obvious. I'm enjoying this so much, I couldn't wait to finish it before I could give this guy five stars. He has me roped in with the kid, the mother, and the captain. The descriptions are in vivid 3-D, so I know the entire lay of the land. Slowly, the author is slipping in evil characters in between the characters you like, and the ones you aren't sure about. This is shaping up to be a 1952 version of Treasure Island, but I can't be sure. I do know that the author has made sure that I have found myself in the very setting he is writing about, and that I care about the people in the story he wants me to, and that I hate the people I am supposed to hate.As a reader and a writer, there is no better pleasure than putting yourself in the hands of a writer who has shown you he can be trusted to lead you to the end of a wild and satisfying story. I will now return to this book, and I doubt my enthusiasm will dampen one bit, if not peak just a little bit more.

A coming-of-age tale and a history of pirates in one, this story held my interest more than I'd expected. Just who - or what - the mysterious Captain Charles Johnson is is never definitively explained; he certainly knows more than any living man ought to about the golden age of piracy, and his stories have an uncanny way of drawing a boy in. The roguish man helps young Jim do some much-needed growing up, lending his not-strictly-legal assistance to the struggling family inn. Jim's dreams of pirate glory are tempered by Johnson's tales of the reality of a pirate's often-desperate life. Just who, or what, a pirate is becomes a blurry line when examined closely - when the same governments condone and condemn piracy depending on how much of a cut they got, when the hunters prove more bloodthirsty and amoral than the hunted, where is the line to be drawn, and by whom? It's a testament to Gilkerson's skill that I eagerly read history lessons in the middle of a novel. An enjoyable, somewhat enigmatic tale!

I just completed "Pirate's Passage" by William Gilkerson, and I was completely entranced and delighted. I'm happily recommending it to friends with similarly salty literary tastes. I know that it is nominally written for a sixth grade audience, and I'm more the Captain's age, but it is such an intelligent work that it will appeal to an audience of any age. I'm very happy that it was recommended to me, only wishing I could remember by whom. I look forward to exploring the rest of Gilkerson's literary and visual arts work.

This was a great book, I loved learning about the different pirates from the different eras but the ending left me feeling a bit dissatisfied. I guess I was expecting more from Captain Charles Johnson.

I was 36 when I read it, and I loved it! I'm guessing, boys would love it too, since it describes the life of one, about 10, with everyday problems, like bullies, bicycles, and chores, set it a run-down tavern, which his family has to fix and raise the money for. That's when a mysterious traveler comes around.I'm encouraging my daughter to read it, so we could discuss that traveler.

I thought it was very cool to learn so much about pirates (which I had zero interest in before reading this book) in such a fun and painless way. Good story.

A very enjoyable tale of adventure that contains lots of historical information and keeps the reader entertained and engaged all the way through. Fun reading!

Bought 2 copies as gifts, one for my father and the other for my grandson, for them to read together - very pleased
