I am 64 years old, I took a HTML & CSS test recently and scored a 35, I had taken some on-line training and had been frustrated by not being able to remember effectively when it came to test time.1) The cognitive approach that Mark Myers uses is for the reader to spend 5 - 10 minutes covering the key elements.2) Then the reader practice's by answering 20 questions that cover the key elements.3) The questions are styled in away that causes the student to retrieve the "key elements" using five different ways of typing their answers:--non-timed big box entry--puzzle assembly--small box: single key stroke entry--timed big box entry--lab style questionsThe student is forced to use multiple visual learning modalities.This approach causes the user to start creating NEW neural pathways in their brain which is "A smarter Way to Learn"I just finished the 10th chapter and I am noticing that I am remembering more!!!

This is a great tutorial as far as layout and hands on learning, but... and this is a BIG one... it's old technology. Websites use flexboxes now, not table as an example. If this was updated I'd definitely be first in line to purchase it, but as it is, I wish I had passed.

This is a great way to learn code! I am a hands on learner and sometimes, it's hard for me to stay focused. I can easily get 3 chapters done a day, and retain the information. I tested this yesterday...after I got home from a long, grueling day of work😣...i sat down and started reading. The chapters took 5-10 minutes at most to read, then, at the end of the chapter, you are directed to go to the practice site.Each chapter has its own practice link. You type in the answers and if you get an incorrect answer, it will go back to it once you have completed the other questions. It will do this until you get it right..I was able to complete 3 chapters and practices last nite and then I walked away..which the author recommends.Today, I started again and I was able to complete three more..having the ability to actually do the steps myself made me realize that it doesn't have to be complicated and there isn't just one way to learn coding, but I found the best way for me. There are programs and books out there that just throw you into coding without showing you the basics first and it can make it more difficult than it has to be.If you are a newbie and you are ready to do what it takes to learn coding (it takes a serious commitment), I would recommend this series to help get you off to a great start!To your success!

I have always had an affinity/natural ability for computer programming, but was unable to take that as my major course of study at the campus I attended when I went to technical school a little 'later' in life. I was able to take a couple of classes in a couple of languages back then, and although I loved it and was good at it, it is still challenging to learn even when you have instructor and tutors to learn it from right in front of you, so now, even more 'later' in life when my ability to learn isn't nearly as quick as when I was younger and my memory is worse, when I wanted to teach myself so I could finally do what I really loved, I knew I was getting into a big challenge for myself.While searching for books here on Amazon, I stumbled across Mark's books while looking up JavaScript texts. His books were highly reviewed and I knew from my previous experiences that the best way to learn coding is to practice it yourself (because in a way you're learning a whole new language; a certain, precise way of thinking). I was very excited that the chapters were short and you practiced every chapter to really get this into your memory (old as I am now, this is a very important aspect).I got the JavaScript book first (which I haven't reviewed yet as I haven't finished it yet), and then found that I really should know HTML/CSS in order to plug in my JavaScript code into the webpages that would be using it, so about halfway through that book I purchased this one and started it. I have really enjoyed this way of learning. I've finished the book before reviewing, the only thing I haven't done is the last "exercise" which is to build my own 3-page webpage. I wanted to wait to review til I truly had gone through the whole book so I would be giving an honest review that is truly from my own experience of the learning process in the book.Just a note, although I firmly give this a very enthusiastic 5 stars, there are a few typos here and there in the book. I have read other self-published books, so that doesn't phase me, I knew what was being communicated or if there was some punctuation or the like left out of a coding example in the book, it was already so impressed on my brain the correct way to do it, sometimes I didn't even notice those tiny errors myself until I was copying the examples into my notes! (which really helps my memory)Final note, all Mark's books in particular are so incredibly inexpensive for the Kindle e-reader version that's why it was so easy to make the first purchase that I did. I downloaded the Kindle for PC app and then could work on either my desktop at home or laptop when traveling, so made it quite easy to continue studying even when I'm here, there and everywhere during my week. Another note: Mark has made it so you can only go to online exercises link from the e-book from PC, not Kindle Fires, phones or tablets, which makes sense because it would be incredibly difficult to code from any of those devices, in my opinion.Main point: if you want a way to teach yourself coding, I think this just might be the best way to do it, most bang for your buck!Final point: please Mark come out with a PHP book soon! That is what I want to learn next after finishing your JavaScript book!

For the non-technical, this book offers essential explanations which are concise and comprehensive without being dumbed down, covering cryptography, computers, radio, and information theory. For the technical expert, it offers a unified view of how their field fits together with others, and the resulting implications.But what sets this book apart from similar introductions is its timelessness. One of the best sections of the book discusses "the koans of bits", paradoxical principles about digital information that prevent us from reasoning about it effectively in our existing social and legal frameworks.This effort to grasp and communicate the fundamentals, those things which will still be true about digital information after every individual piece of our present technology has changed, is the reason I would recommend this book. Chapter 8, on radio, is excellent, as is the Appendix, "The Internet as System and Spirit".In contrast, the weaker parts of the book can read like op-ed pieces, dwelling on specific laws (e.g. copyright, net neutrality) and having more off a tone of urgency and outrage. It's not as though the authors are wrong in these cases; I agree with them. In fact, the authors were prescient: this book was written seven years ago and these issues are more relevant than ever. It's simply a change in tone from the rest of the book.I recommend it, and look forward to rereading it in the years to come.

Think of this book not as "Internet Policy for Dummies" but as "Internet Policy for the Educated Layman." Abelson, Ledeen, and Lewis survey a broad swath of tech policy territory -- privacy, search, encryption, free speech, copyright, spectrum policy -- and provide the reader with a nice history and technology primer on each topic.The authors aren't really seeking to be polemical in this book by advancing a single thesis or worldview. To the extent the book's chapters are guided by any central theme, it comes in the form of the "two basic morals about technology" they outline in Chapter 1:(1) "The first is that information technology is inherently neither good nor bad -- it can be used for good or ill, to free us or to shackle us.(2) Second, new technology brings social change, and change comes with both risks and opportunities. All of us, and all of our public agencies and private institutions, have a say in whether technology will be used for good or ill and whether we will fall prey to its risks or prosper from the opportunities it creates."Mostly, what they aim to show is that digital technology is reshaping society and, whether we like or it not, we better get used to it -- and quick!Like John Palfrey and Urs Gasser's excellent book Born Digital, Blown to Bits is very accessible and each chapter contains a great deal of useful information to bring you up to speed on the hottest tech policy debates under the sun. This is a book for the educated consumer to heed real warnings when it comes to privacy, security, surveillance, and data analytics-driven advertising. This is not a book about the "digital revolution" and its role in the evolution of society or even humanity toward some digitized future, which is ok - there are plenty of other books like that with their heads in the digital clouds. This book is a rather grounded cautionary tale on the actual state of technology in society today, giving this romantic topic a very sober treatment.

Most people have no clue what information they have made available, to whom it is available and what the people who get it can do with it. Abelson gives a lot of clues and does it in fine style.If you do online banking, shopping, stock trading, email, social media, or just live in the 21'st Century you need to read this. Even if you don't own a computer or other device (although you won't be reading this review if you don't) you ought to know what the people who do own computers can do to you because even if you are not online your personal information is.

Very informative book about the digital world and some ethical considerations created by technology.

I have no issues with the book itself. My disappointment was with the format.It was irritating, to find sections of text which were unreadable because they ran off the right margin. Also, the text contains many illustrations. All of these were too small to read. These errors occurred on both the Kindle and Nexus 7.These are simple format errors which detracted from the experience.I also have the hard copy, which is quite readable. I note here that the Kindle version costs only a little less than the hard copy. This make putting up with the formatting even more exasperating.

Great book! Really helping with ethics in my computer science class. Lovely hard cover book.

Generally thought provoking and insightful. Some of the details are hard to follow and probably not worth the effort.

Not a surprise, Mero is a princess and she is being asked to return to her people. So Kimihito and party go with her to see that not all is better down where its wetter and that someone is trying to ruin the interspecies treaty. Then Kimihito is held at a hospital for observation because despite all his injuries, accidents and near death experiences he just pops back up like new. Lala then meets a young girl who is dying and wants to know is she should help her, with a surprising ending.This one was a fast read and enjoyable. Seeing the girls in an environment normally out of their reach is funny, and to see another side of Lala was adorable. Enjoy this one.

The new volume of Monster Musume is out and this one is another winner. Our resident drama queen Mero has been ordered home by her mother, an actual queen, and the gang tags along. They soon find themselves in palace intrigue and matching wits with a scylla named Octo. I am going to assume in the original format, Octo spoke with a regional Japanese accent; for the translation, it sounds like she's from the Deep South. We also find out where Mero gets her doomed romance fixation. If anything, Mother takes matters to a level greater than Mero ever has and it leads to a great climax. The second story stars Lala. She meets a girl with a terminal illness who takes advantage of the opportunity to speak with a grim reaper about what will happen when she dies. Lala decides she wants to do something but it might involve breaking the rules on interfering with someone's fate. Kimihito points out "From the time you first meet someone, you've already started to interfere with their fate, haven't you?" Lala's solution shows she is new at helping people but her heart's in the right place and she might just have done the right thing.

Another great entry in the Monster Musume series, also LaLa finally gets some time and she is adorable. Mero is also very good and good to see the greater world building. If you love monster girls and are a huge fan of the Musume series, buy it.However if you are not already a fan and the other volumes did not cut it for you, well this is not going to do it either.

Great series. Just as much fun as the Rosario + Vampire series. The poor guy, never gets a break.. lol The artwork is top shelf in every way, and the writing is as well. If you enjoy the "harem" style magna, this will please.

I'm a huge anime and manga fan and have enjoyed reading this entire series,been following it since volume one and watch the anime, and like it's previous volumes this one did not disappoint.

Volume 9 of Okaydo's Monster Musume prominently features both Mero and Lala on the cover and for good reason, as both girls have stories that take up a majority of this particular entry into the series. Beginning with Mero who when we last left off was about to introduce us to her mother, who we meet, and learn that the apple truly doesn't fall too far from the tree when it comes to their love for romantic tragedies. Afterwards is Lala's story, where she joins the luckless Kimihito in the hospital as he recovers from the ending of Mero's story. Here Lala meets a girl who is on the brink of death, and being a real life messenger of the afterlife, she decides to take on this little girls case herself. Only two major plots this time round, which makes the book feel more complete but somewhat shorter than the previous few volumes.As always Seven Seas continues to amaze me with their horridness dialogue choices, making what should be a simple sentence into a complex and stupid pun filled experience. I found that skimming through the text actually seemed to help, but I still recommend that anyone who wants a more literal translation of what the Japanese reads should go find one of the few groups who are doing fan translations. And don't feel bad about it, you already bought this book and supported the author, so at the very least you should be able to enjoy the true experience.
