Wesley clearly illustrates the problems of today with laser-like precision and without holding anything back. He writes with razor-sharp wit on topics many would not dare speak about. This book is a necessary read in today's climate."...even as it was always the most salient of all facts, the one most readily on display, the thing that was unspeakable precisely because it need never be spoken: that as the bearer of an Asian face in America, you paid some incremental penalty, never absolute but always omnipresent, that meant that you were by default unlovable and unloved; that you were presumptively a nobody, a mute and servile figure, distinguishable above all by your total incapacity to threaten anyone; that you were many laudable things that the world might respect and reward, but that you were fundamentally powerless to affect anyone in a way that would make you either loved or feared."
Wesley Yang's writing style is to the point and cutting. I would have preferred more articles relating to the Asian American experience but out of the ~9 in this book, only 3 are directly related and 1 is about Francis Fukuyama. Still, every essay in this book is amazing.

A sheer genius. I’m so glad to discover Yang. America needs more voices like his, and I can’t wait to read more of His work in the future.
Imagine you knew someone similarly situated to you in terms of being an Asian American male of a certain age, and then imagine that relative to you, this person had intelligence, sensitivity, breadth of reading, and boldness maxed out as attributes. Imagine then that you sit down to read what this smarter, better read, bolder person had to say about life as an Asian American in the early 21st century. That is my experience of reading Wesley Yang. It is a continuous astonishment at (1) what it feels like to, without exaggeration, feel represented for the first time in my life, and (2) how good of a writer Yang is.
Wesley Yang is a genius. I've been looking forward to this book since I first heard about it, before publication. I love Yang's fresh, brutally honest, brilliant, and grounded journalism. I am so grateful for his bravery in an intellectual climate that is increasingly rule-bound and over-careful. It makes his writing fierce and necessary. And also just plain good. Next, he should definitely write a memoir...
A well-written collection essays on a variety of individuals and topics. Yang's writing is concise, analytical, intelligent, and at times raw. As cliché as it sounds, this book will make you think. It will challenge your opinions, teach you something you didn't know before, and maybe even make you a little angry. It is an essential read in our current climate.
